Cube Zero

I absolutely love the Cube movies. There is three of them, and they all are similar, yet somewhat different. The first one, Cube, is still my favorite. People wake up inside a weird contraption, which consists of square/cube-shaped rooms. They don't remember how they got there, or what they are doing there. Each room has exists in each side, and it turns out the rooms are connected to other rooms, also cube-shaped. As they move through the contraption, they soon learn that some of the rooms are trapped, while others are safe.

In its basic form, the movie is nothing but waiting for the next trap to go off. To see what it looks like (some are quite mindboggling, others are merely gory) and to see “who's next”. The good thing about the movie, is that the actors are pretty unknown and that none of the characters clearly stands out as the “hero”. Which is quite different from a lot of movies with a lead character who obviously will survive. But what exactly is this Cube, this contraption?

Cube 2: Hypercube is the sequel to Cube. A different group of people once again wakes up and tries to escape. More traps, more deaths. And slightly more explanation about the background of the Cube. Of all three, this is the worst movie, but it's still entertaining enough to watch.

Cube Zero is the third installment, and it is actually a prequel to the first two. And the reason I write this entry, since I recently bought the dvd. I watched the movie before it was out on dvd over here, and it is quite different from the other two. Different, in the sense that most of the action takes place outside of the cube. This time we get a lot of information about the contraption's background. But in a way, the information provided merely raises more questions. Oh yes, people still wake up in the cube and get killed. In more explicit ways than before. I guess the budget increased with each movie.

I like movies that create a sort of alternate universe, and that leave a lot of room for speculation. To fill in the blanks, so to speak. This is one of the reasons why Cube is the best of the series. This is also an important reason why I like the Hellraiser movies, but maybe I'll get to that at a later point in time.
