The cost of living can be quite high, especially in major cities. But no matter where you live, you will probably try to get the best deal possible. It seems to be human nature, we don't really like hearing how our neighbor pays $50/month less for a bigger house.
If you feel masochistic, if you plan on moving to a different neighborhood, or if you are just curious, check out
Rentometer. Enter a location, type of house, and rental cost, and the site tells you whether your rent is high or low compared to similar locations nearby. This way you can see how $1000 at Broadway, Seattle is (much)
lower than average for a 4 bedroom place. If you are a home owner, I imagine you can have some fun comparing rental prices to your monthly mortgage cost.
